Sorry to hear about the passing of Carmen. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family in their time of sorrow. My Grandmother would talk of him always when he would be on television. His father was a cousin of my Grandmother who was from bracigliano Italy. May God Bless the family with all the happy memories you shared together !!!

I remember spending time Mr. Basilio during a number of charity events. He was truly a joy to be around and it meant so much to me to say I have meet a champion. I will never forget the how he would drop his pen, I would pick it up and he would hit me. He still had the punch! God Bless you and your family and thank you for being my champion!

We feel very fortunate to have had Carmen and Josie as not just our neighbors, but our friends for many years. Carmen took the phrase, "it's nice to be important, but more important to be nice," to a new level. We will miss Carmen and his short jabs.

I was going through customs at JFK in 1968, when the customs agent took my passport to read my information. He said, "you're from Canastota?" "Yes," I said. He said "Isn't that the home of Carmen Basilio?" Again, I said "yes." He said, "what a great fighter, you go right through." And he never opened my luggage. Thank you, Carmen for all the good you brought to Canastota!

My sincere condolences to the family of Carmen Basilio on his passing. I graduated from Le Moyne College in 1977 and played on the baseball team. Carmen was the team's pitching coach, I believe in name only, as he seemed to know very little about baseball. Nonetheless, his involvement with the team allowed me to get to know him, and because we shared the same Italian heritage, he took me under his wing and made my transition to college life much easier. We would often play racket ball during the week days, and one of the first lessons all students learned was that you should not beat Carmen at racket ball, or else you would be confronted with A left hook to the ribs (ha!). I know this first hand, as I only defeated Carmen once. He was such a great competitor. Carmen was a special person, and I consider it a privilege and blessing to have known him.
May God Bless,
Chuck Libordi

As a young kid I always remember hearing stories about Carmen Basilio from my father. My dad also was an onion farmer in Prattsburgh, NY. Following in my father's footsteps, I, too, became a Basilio fan.
Years later, at a parade in Bath, I had the honor of meeting and talking to Carmen! He gave me a playful jab on the chin as I told him he had always been a hero in our family.
I am so honored that I had this opportunity to meet the man who brought down so many giants.
My father would have been proud.
I was saddened to hear of his passing and would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the Basilio family.
