My most sincere sympathy for your family. Al and I shared two passions-hockey and sailing. While strick and demanding professionally, once he was outside of that zone one could see the personal side come out. Sometimes if you looked closely at his eyes you could even see some of the mischievousness he had in him. He is certainly in part responsible for sending me down the right path in life. May God bless him and accept Al into his kingdom.

We are saddened by Al's death. However, I have great memories of times spent with Al. Those memories are centered around old Beatles songs, the Three Stooges, marts, and corny one-liner jokes. I have lived out of the area for many years but always made a point of getting together with Al whenever I got to Rochester. Unfortunately for me, Al and Joanie were often sailing around the lake and unavailable. We will keep family members in our thoughts and prayers.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences for your loss. Although words cannot fill the emptiness of your loss, many have found comfort in the pages of God's word, the Bible. In it we find the promise that we can be reunited with our loved ones that have fallen asleep in death. (John 5:28,29) The Bible also tells us where this happy reunion will take place. (Psalm 37:11,29) May the promises of Our Creator, bring a measure of comfort to your grieving hearts as you cherish the loving memories of Mr. Maerz.

To the Maerz Family,
There will always be a special place in my heart for Coach Mearz. In his fist year of coaching hockey at IHS, he gave a nervous skinny freshman, me, a chance to play on the varsity. I learned a lot about hockey and myself in the 4 years I spent playing for him. As I became a parent and a hockey coach, my respect for him has only grown. He will be missed but his spirit lives on in the hundreds of boys he coached.
My Deepest Condolences,
Rick Sterrett

Your kind heart and gentle soul are sure to be excellent angel qualities. Until we meet again....

Coach Maerz
What a good coach and a great person. I learned so much from him in the many years I knew him. He taught us the value of not dropping our sticks, cussing, and going offside on a 3 on 2. He showed a big heart as he welcomed me to his house on many occasions and gave me rides to practice. The drives to Lakeshore are memories I will always remember. His energy, drive, and smile will be with all of us who had the blessing to know Coach Maerz.

Dear Joanie,
I am so sad to read about Al's passing and I am so sorry for your loss. Al meant the world to me and I admired him greatly for all that he has done for our community.
I remember Al picking up donations for us while he was at the fire hall for Meals on Wheels. He was my go to guy for the Irondequoit Community Cupboard when it got crazy over there, especially during the holidays. He was so compassionate and he seemed to have so much strength and energy.
I loved to hear him talk about how excited he was to get back to sailing while he was waiting for you to finish your school year. He was the kind of person who always wanted to know how I was doing rather than discuss how he was doing. He inspired me to always want to do more and I just want you to know how much I admired him. Huge hugs Joanie and PLEASE let me know if there is anything I/we can do for you.
Love,
Debbie Evans

To Joanie and Family,
Please know that the thoughts and prayers of the Ryan Family are with you.
Mr. Maerz was my coach, my mentor, and my friend. He gave me chances when others would not. He gave me direction when I was lost. He picked me up when I fell down. And he opened doors when others were shut. He stood by me when I made mistakes. He had praise when appropriate and properly motivated me when needed. (He had a way with that.) He gave me an example to follow and the framework by which to succeed.
I owe much of what I am today to Coach Maerz and his life lessons guide me daily as a father, a husband, and as a coach. I can not thank him enough. Being a good man and living a generous life is probably thanks enough for Coach Maerz.
I look forward to being able to come back to Irondequoit, to tell him thank you, and say good bye.
All the Best,
Chris Ryan and the Ryan Family
