When I was a little boy I viewed the world simply. My cousins and I played Cowboys and Indians often. My aunt's name sounded like it rhymed with horse, so I called her Dorse. She often referred to my mother and father as " The Kids ". That was confusing because they looked big to me.
I was always amazed that my aunt and my mother always knew how to dress us for
playing outside. It may be sunny, but they would put a rain jacket and rubbers on us.
Inevitably, it would rain later that morning. How did they know ?
As a kid, I always felt like my cousins were my brothers and sister. My aunt and my
mother treated all eleven of us the same. If someone got hurt playing too hard, they
didn't overreact. They calmly patched us up and sent us back out to play.
Now I know her as Doris and a great wife to Leo and a mother to us all.
