Obituary of Robert E Blunt

Blunt, Robert E. "Bob" Robert E. "Bob" Blunt, born June 3, 1924 in Long Island, NY, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in his sleep on Saturday morning, September 24, 2016 in Colorado Springs, CO at the age of 92. Bob was a war hero, a good and honorable man, and a dear father. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in WWII in the 86th Mountain Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. His Bronze Star citation praises his "excellent leadership" and states that "his brave determination to fulfill all duties in a superior manner add lustre to the finest traditions of the United States Army." He trained at Camp Hale near Leadville, CO, and although he moved back to New York after the war, he always longed to come back to live in Colorado. After Julia, his wife of 63 years, passed away on March 4, 2016, Bob finally flew out to Colorado on March 19 to be near family, where he checked off one adventure after another on his lifelong wish list. He was honored with fellow members of the 10th on Cooper Mountain, and he returned to Camp Hale. He rode through Rocky Mountain National Park -- twice, heading back home over Berthoud Pass, which he remembered doing on a dirt road in winter in the 1940s. He picnicked in the mountains, supervised firewood-cutting operations, and visited Breckenridge and its 10th Mountain memorial statue. In the short six months Bob lived "back home" in Colorado, he remarked frequently how beautiful Pikes Peak looked filling the western horizon. Tho' he lived most of his life back east, his heart was in the west. He is survived by his son, Rob (Margaret), and his daughter, Randa (Ben); by his granddaughters, Jennie (John), Katie and Julianne; and by his great-grandchildren, Sophie and Daniel. His family will receive friends Saturday 9:30 – 10:30am at the funeral home where his funeral service will follow at 10:30. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
