I got to know Jack Ertle through Oasis, the learning program for Senior Citizens. Jack was more "senior" than me. I took several of his courses in classical music appreciation, including, of course, of Mahler, but also Shostakovich and others. He was a very knowledgeable and efficient teacher and moreover, it was clear he had a lifetime of listening carefully and with pleasure to music to draw upon. He was always cheerful and resourceful, even he became more infirm and his upper body angled to the right. I was happy when I heard he moved into Chapel Oaks and then heard from another resident that he needed the care at Cherry Ridge. I am saddened that he is not still in my world, but know that his strong faith has led him home to the Lord.

Mr. Ertle was the coach for our first Mock Trial team at Charles Finney High School. I'm not even sure why he volunteered to because I don't think he had an connection to the school, but that made his giving of his own time to do so even more meaningful. He was always very kind and he really cared about helping the kids develop their skills, along with the attorney coaches we had. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. May his memory be a blessing.

I think this is the same “Mr. Ertle” who also taught at Charlotte High School 1958-1959. He was a kind man and always willing to help with school activities.

I only had Mr. Ertle for one class, business law, but I did special projects with him including running the Xerox room from 75 to 76. He kicked me out of class once when he knew I already understood the material he was going over that day. Made me feel smart... of course I made a bee line for the Xerox room as it was my favorite hangout spot. Sitting here on an island off the west coast of Canada with a tear running down my cheek for a man who had no idea how much he was loved.

I knew Jack as a long time colleague with the City School District. Always impressed with his musical knowledge and heard him on WXXI. I bowled with him in the Schoolmasters Bowling League, which he led for a long time. Due to a physical problem, he had the slowest ball, but it worked for him.
He was a gentleman and a credit to everything he touched.
Goodbye Jack.

Patricia, your brother spoke so highly of you and your entire family! He loved his time with his nieces and nephews and we always knew when he was visiting with them. It was a pleasure to work with him at John Marshall High School. My condolences to you and your family.

I am going to miss my dear friend Jack. He was the sweetest most gentle, kind and caring person, not just to me, to everyone. He called me every morning for the last 14 years. I will miss our daily chats, 2 hour breakfasts, going to the R.P.O. or simply hanging out for a few hours. I feel so privileged to have gotten to know him for the wonderful person he was.
R.I.P. Jack! You were a special, one of a kind man.

In addition to all of the wonderful memories people have shared of Jack, I want to share how important he was to the WXXI Classical 91.5 family for many years. He was a beloved on-air host who loved sharing his knowledge of the music, and inspiring an appreciation for classical music for so many. He lived what he loved. My own children, now adults, both remember Mr. Ertle coming to their school (W. Irondequoit) and hearing him share that appreciate of classical music. His memory will live on with his WXXI family.

For family and friends of Mr. Ertle: I too remember Mr. Ertle very fondly. He was an awesome teacher and mentor and he was very influential in my career choice. In my senior year of high school (Class of 1971), I had the rare honor and privilege of being his Student Secretary. In my free class time I helped him in the Business Department Office. I learned so much from him about organization, setting priorities, meeting deadlines and being dependable. At the end of the year he gave me a green stone turtle pin as a thank you and for good luck. I wore that pin to my first job interview and I got the job! That job led me to a very long, successful and satisfying career. I am glad he had a long, fulfilled and good life. I am sure there is a place for him in heaven. Rest In Peace and God Bless you Mr. Ertle. Debbie Kraemer Morrison.....Class of 1971. Go Jurists!

Condolences to the Ertle family. Jack was a great Coach and coached all 3 of my kids at Dewey Gardens Bowling since they started at the ages of 3-5. They still talk about him at the ages of 22, 17 & 13! He was always so patient and you could see his love for teaching the kids every week. My kids will always remember him.

Jack's educational and calming classical music radio shows on WXXI over twenty years ago were my first exposure to this fine man. Years later after I retired from Kodak, my wife and I met Jack and became friends, while taking several of his excellent Oasis music courses for seniors. Enjoyed helping Jack as he moved into the St. Ann's community. To his family I offer sincere condolences from Art and Diana Nielsen.

Mr. Ertle was my most valuable teacher at Marshall. I was in his typing and business ed classes. He was definitely my most memorable teacher too. I’m so glad to see that he lived a long and vibrant life and touched so many other lives for the better. I will be praying for God’s comfort upon Mr. Ertle’s family during this difficult time.

I was a student of Mr. Erdles in my senior year (1988-1989). I was in his Business Law course. I learned so much from him and remember him as such a nice guy. I was very fortunate to have been in one of his classes in his last year as a teacher. It was a privilege to know him. My senior year was my only year I attended John Marshall High School, but he was one of few teachers who left a lasting impression on me

Jack was a very nice fellow and I enjoyed talking to him many times about music, when we were both djs on WGMC and then on WRUR. Occasionally I even substituted for him on WRUR and he was kind enough to let me pick my own choices, for his classical shows. I thought that was quite classy of him! I send my condolences to his family. Ray Baumler
