Robert E. Van Hise “Bob”
West Irondequoit: Saturday, November 14, 2020 at the age of 89. Predeceased by his brother, Earl, and sister, Dorothy Hiering. He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Mary Ann; children, Bruce (Lauri), Beth (James) Warner; granddaughters, Emma Van Hise, Kathryn and Abigail Warner; sisters-in-law, Jane Van Hise and Dorothy Rawdanowicz; and many nieces and nephews.
Bob grew up in Hamilton Square, New Jersey on a small family farm. He was the only member of his immediate family who had the opportunity to attend college, graduating from Rutgers University in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and later completing a course of study in accounting through correspondence school.
Following two years as a radar systems instructor in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, Bob pursued a career in aeronautics, working on Project Gemini, NASA’s second human spaceflight program. He retired after 25 years with Eastman Kodak Company’s Federal Systems division.
Bob will be remembered as a caring husband and father, and as someone who treated everyone he met with respect and kindness. He was an avid reader with a weakness for action thrillers, a college basketball devotee and patron of live theater, and a coin and stamp collector. Bob loved to laugh and had a wonderful sense of humor, and regularly put his engineering skills to good use by fixing almost anything.
Services and interment were held in private. In lieu of flowers, please be kind, compassionate, and benevolent to loved ones and those in need.
