When I first met Pastor and Ruth, it had nothing to do with church. We happened to be seated at the same table at a wedding. Isn't it amazing how God works! Over time, and even though I did not attend the church he was pastoring then, we became friends, and I would often seek his counsel on matters of faith or simply life in general. No question was ever out of the question, his time (busy as it was) was always available to me. I guess it should have come as no surprise then, that when my unease about where my faith journey was headed became apparent, I knew exactly where to go next. I have to say that most Sundays I sat mesmerized as he taught and shared and opened the scriptures in a way I'd never heard before, that suddenly made sense to me, that drew me into wanting to go deeper, that made God's word real and understandable and useful. And he did it all with the most disarming sense of humor. I believe that I am in Christian service today thanks to Pastor Caruana. Not a week goes by that I don't draw from something I heard him say all those years ago that is still a light for my path, and a reason to continue on the journey. Thank you Pastor Caruana - you gave me a gift that I treasure. You have indeed finished your race and have arrived safely home.
