Obituary of Jean G. Hawkes

Brighton: Unexpectedly on Sunday, January 8, 2023 at the age of 79. Pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Robert Hawkes; daughter, Ann Marie Bailey; sister, Patty Gayou Flanders; nephew, Mike Flanders. She is survived by her sons, Christopher Bailey and Mark Bailey; grandchildren, Robert and Nicole Bailey; sister, Nancy (Ken Lockhart) Gayou; brother, Robert Gayou; many nieces and nephews; special friend Cora Goyette.

Jean was devoted to her family, her constant companion Maisie the cat and her passion for gardening was unparalleled. She was a strong advocate for racial equality, social justice, women’s rights and above all a kind and compassionate friend and mentor to many.
She had the knack of finding a grain of positivity even in the darkest moments and would say that her life couldn’t be better.
She was a consummate fundraiser and so many community agencies, were the recipient of her extraordinary grant writing skills.  Her laugh and ability to find humor in every situation was her trademark. Jean will be sorely missed. Memorial donations may be directed to Spiritus Christi Prison Outreach Program, or preferred charity.
