My family marched in Ray's New York state championship band for years. I was privileged to play the flute and piccolo in the band under such a great director. But it was more than that. Ray and his wife were like good friends to all. I so look forward to seeing Ray again soon on a paradise EARTH where he will never have to leave us but can continue mastering his musical abilities if that is what he wants. He will be there to welcome back my brother Ron, killed in Vietnam 1964. Ray really liked Ron, his tuba player. Instead of sorrow, unbelievable happiness and satisfaction for mankind. Psalm 37:10,11,29. Revelation 21:3,4. Love you all, always

I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Mr.Shahin. I started taking flute lessons from him at his home on the hill in Holley when I was in the 4th grade. He taught me discipline, pride, integrity, honesty, teamwork, and friendship. My life would not be as full today had it not been for him and the influence he had on my life. Thank you, you will be missed.

Ray was my band director in Hilton 1982-86. He was an inspiration and respected by all. You were proud to be his student. I will never forget him sending me out to his car to get a bootleg Genesis tape. He would shut the band room doors and crank it up! He was a great mentor and friend. He will be missed.

I met Ray Shahin when I was in middle school as one of David's friends. It is easy to see how this man's love for people and music touched so many. Three decades later, I came across him at the high school where I teach, still helping students with music. Wonderful man.
with love and sympathy,

TO BE PART OF THAT AWESOME BAND

BE AFTER MIDNIGHT BUT WE ALWAYS GOT OUR INSTRUMENTS OUT
AND PLAYED FOR EVERYONE. RIP

I was a student of Rays in Holley from 1958 thru 1960. He was my favorite teacher. I will never forget the time he cought me playing dance band music instead of my lesson work. He knew how much I loved playing my tenor sax. My husband and I had a country rock band for years. Ray will never be forgotten. My condolences to his family.

Joyce and family,
My condolences. We will all miss not only the fine Band Director and writer, but for me, the best teacher I ever had. While Professors may have been great, no other teacher had a way of pulling the very best out of you for your greatest fear was that you might disppoint Mr. Shahin.
Even at age 56, as I prepared for the Holley Band reunion, and had my wife give me frozen cucumber slices to reduce the swelling in my lips so that I could practice, my fear was that I would disappoint him!
The Angels had better memorize the music correctly, stay constantly dressed-right, not be flat, and leave room for a Mack truck between the notes lest they feel bad that they disppointed Saint Shahin.
Best,
Keith Gallagher

Ray Shahin was a fabulous gift to so many people and I count myself among them. Through his mentorship and tutelage, he instilled and reinforced the principles that have guided me for decades; integrity, attention to detail, the importance of effort and the continual drive to excellence. His influence extended well beyond the music and the classroom and into my life for the last 40 plus years. How do you say thank you for such an extraordinary and lasting gift? I feel so fortunate to have seen him at the 2009 BKHS Hall of Fame Induction and to have spent an evening together laughing and remembering. His level of energy and enthusiasm for life, his zeal for excellence in all endeavors and his practical wisdom showed through in all that he said and did that evening. My thoughts and prayers are with Joyce, with my classmate Mark and the rest of the family during this difficult time of loss and illness. I wish I could be there with all of you today but the immediacy of the event and the distance from North Carolina precludes my attendance. May God bless the Shahin family at this difficult time. Know how much I appreciated this man who meant so much to me....forever missed but never forgotten! Mike

The Holley HS Class of 1957 had hoped to see Ray at its 55th reunion mid July, but regretfully we did not see him. He was at many of our former ones though and we always loved seeing Joyce and him. We all have such wonderful memories of Ray's generosity and talent. My sister was in his first Holley State Champs band (white bucks and jeans were their uniform as they didn't have regular ones. That changed quickly after the win and they kept on winning. Ray gave lessons to a whole slew of students who will forever remember him. We are all very sad at his passing and hope that Joyce gets well soon.

Dear Mrs. Shahin and the Shahin Family, friends, educators and those educated by Ray Shahin....sorry, Mr. Shahin. He’ll always be Mr. Shahin to me. That’s not to say I wasn’t familiar with him, quite the contrary. I am familiar with quite a bit of Mr. Shahin. For example: his size. He must have been the biggest teacher I ever had. All he had to do was to enter a room and with his incredible energy he had everyone’s immediate attention. I think we all liked to pay attention to Mr. Shahin. Somehow, we intuitively knew that we were going to hear something worthwhile. I personally think that this is one of, if not the most important keys to being an educator... getting students to want your information.
I’m also familiar with his different smiles. They’ve followed me and encouraged me throughout my entire career. You know the ones I mean.
My least favorite but probably the one I treasure most now is his grin of disappointment. He was the only person I’ve ever known that could encourage me even while being disappointed. This smile said: “You jerk, you’re so much better than that. I don’t know about you but I still need to hear that every once in a while.
He put on his smile of assurance when you felt like the task in front of you was equal to climbing Mt. Everest. In his smile was hidden all the gear you needed to make the climb.
Another smile of his was worn often whilst conducting. It was the pure smile of joy at knowing you were about to play better than you ever had before. A smile so contagious and pure that it generally swept through the whole band, which ever of them happened to be rehearsing or playing at the moment.
I was fortunate enough to have met him before my four years at Bishop Kearney. I also had the opportunity to receive the benefit of his vast knowledge long after I left. When I came to him as I embarked upon my arranging career, asking him “How do I arrange?, he said, “Well, what do you want this to sound like ? I sang a few bars and he said: “There ya go, you just arranged it. Now write it down dummy. It may not be quite as easy as that but the point was then that I needed the encouragement to believe in myself and that was just what I got. That’s what I always got from him.
The loss of Mr. Shahin instills an even deeper need for me to excel. It reminds me of my responsibility to pass on what was so freely and lovingly given to me by that great man. Please except my deepest condolences from afar, I so wish I could be with you today.
That the song “Somewhere should be our link to him and to one another is no coincidence. Somewhere, anywhere, wherever you are may the music be with you and all that you can be.
In music,
Dave Reinhart

Ray Shahin, the real music man, feared, revered and loved by all. His arrangements, better than the origianls. Trumpets are playing in heaven for your arrival.
I was one of Ray's students at Bishop Kearney from "75-79. Not his most talented but it was such an honor to be a part of the BK Marching Kings and to play his music. To this day his arrangements still give me chills. My deepest sympathies to the Shahin family.

I’m director, manager and lead trumpet in the RG&E Big Band. We’ve been playing volunteer concerts in the Rochester area for senior citizen homes, parks, schools, etc, for over 60 years. Ray Shahin has been a member of our band for about 15 years. He was a great man, a mentor to many including myself. With his wisdom, spirit and knowledge, he inspired our group to continue doing our public service. In recent years, he has been the glue that held our group together, which is composed of mostly retirees of RG&E and other companies who enjoy playing for the love of music and to make people happy. In the last 7 years we’ve lost 7 members (Angelo Marrone, Lenny Sacco, Sam Spallina, John Terranova, John Capone, Urban Bieck and Casper Gerace). It’s always miraculous to me, as someone passes on; someone shows up to take their place. Ray’s shoes will be difficult to fill. Ray touched many lives through the years. He’s the “Mr Holland’s Opus of our area. My wife Donna went to Bishop Kearney, where there’s a huge following of fans. Our sympathy and prayers go out to the family.
