Sal was my child hood friend. We grew up together on Townsend st. I will never forget him ever. My favorite story was when we were kids with sally and Rose we played house. Him and I were the parents and we were trying to go in garage to close the door and the kids would sleep in the grass. When he tried to close the garage he sliced open his hand and had to go to emergency for stitches. I know he never forgot about that. When we were teenagers we would laugh about it. My heart is heavy for the family his wife and children. I am sorry to see such a great man gone from this earth. However I’m glad he is no longer in pain. Rip Sal I will miss you.

Sal will I have a special place in my heart, based on our time together mann to boy and man to man. Hours and hours of road trips one after another, Travel Hockey can bind a family together and just as easy tears them apart. Mostly ours was good, I ordered and he obeyed, it lasted quite awhile.. We did have good time and Sal was quite successful but there was this one time! Sal was a 19 at the time and was just traded from Fort Erie to St, Catherine Falcons, Junior B of the Ontario Hockey League. There was just about a month left on the season the Falcons needed some muscle up front and Sal found his roll as the enforcer. He would begin each game in warm-ups protecting the center red line, back and forth he would skate, throwing and dodging verbal barbs from the other tams enforcer he was literally right next to him on the other side of the other side of the center line. these were generally rather tame exchange but as the playoffs were getting closet hype did as well. they would square off, push and shove. the Falcons were #2 in the league and Weland was #1 and they eliminated there opponents in the first round and met in the finals, it was lets say a little tense at the Weland Rink for game one, The teams came to the warm-up skate and posturing started immediately. Now there in n one thing about these warm-ups, there is Generally ONLY ONE Referee to monitor some 40 young men with a high level of testosterone on display..The second game was much the same.but the third game became Donnybrook straight away the warm-ups began just as in the earlier games but the Falcons were up 2 game to 0.. I don't remember if either team made a full lap around the red line when the fists started flying there was no referee in attendance but they came flying out of their locker room nearly half naked, it took the nearly 15 minutes to break things up and issue penalties.Sal unscathed from the festivities received 10 minutes for fighting and a game misconduct which meant he would not be able to play in the next game. $250.00 was a lot of money for this 19 year old. The Falcons won game 3 and management decided they needed Sal for game 4, they paid the fine and on to Game 4. In game 4 Sal scored what eventually became the game winner from is knees after being crushed by a cross check the kidney. Upper right corner over the out stretched arm of the Weland Goalie. This was a home game for the Falcons and the place went wild. there was dancing in the streets of St. Catherine that night. Sal, we already miss you.

So saddened to hear about this today. Instantly I recalled so many great memories growing up playing hockey together. Like many do, Sal and I lost touch after our high school years, but never forgotten will be the hours spent at S.I.R., Cobbs Hill Pond and Sal’s basement and street playing endless hours of hockey. Those were the days! Truth be told, I think it was Sal that gave me my first nickname, “Hollywood.” I hated it at the time, but I came to realize it was because he was jealous that I had better hair than him! I miss those days and my heart goes out to Sal’s family and friends. Rest In Peace old friend! I wish I had a photo to share, but the indelible memories will last far longer.

I am so sorry to hear of Sal’s passing. Sal and I were best buddies many years ago. We met playing baseball together at south side little league. We quickly became friends.
Sal and his wonderful family are the reason I started playing hockey. I still recall clearly the newspaper clipping from the Democrat and Chronicle of us playing street hockey in front of his old house on Avril ave. We played travel hockey together for many years and subsequently played high school hockey against each other.
I recall Sal was quite a player and had a great nose for the net. I recall how kind his family always were to me. I recall Sal had a real passion for life.
As happens with many of our childhood friends sometimes we slowly lost touch. Sal and I did after high school. But I will never forget him and all the fun times so many years ago. Rest In Peace old buddy!
