What a wonderful man, although I had only a brief encounter at the Summerville grill after I just moved here, I recall his excitement about his upcoming move he was making, and we enjoyed a meal and conversation that evening. I thought, how great is that you go to a local establishment and the towns judge eats dinner with you. I felt like I knew him a lifetime and he left me feeling I had known him a lifetime. My condolences to your family, Rest In Peace

I was shocked to hear that Joe passed away last Thursday. The Swikehardt/Seward families were always very close with the Geniers. My Mom (Nona Swikehardt) and Ethel (Joe's Mom) were like sisters. During those past years, we spent many times together with Ethel and Leo and the boys. I will always remember those happy days. Thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

Thank you, Judge Genier, for being a role model to me, and so many other new Assistant District Attorneys starting out in the Monroe County DAs Office. I was so blessed to have been assigned to your Court as my first rotation. You were no nonsense, but also fair and just. My greatest memory of you is from 2007 on a Tuesday afternoon during court. My 1 1/2 year old son had a febrile seizure while at a day care about a mile from the courthouse. My father-in-law called the court since he knew that was where I was. Someone came and told you, while you were on the bench. You stopped court, came off the bench, grabbed my box of files and told me to come with you. No one ever said no to Judge Genier, so I followed you. I do not remember the rest, because it is a blur....but learned after that you put my box in my car and told me to drive around the corner to the RGH emergency department. My son was there, and was fine, but that I needed to get there. You offered to drive me, but I said I could do it. I asked how you would continue court without an ADA - and you told me "you would handle it." You are a true gentleman and will be missed by so many. I pray your family has a sense of peace when hearing stories about you and the many lives you touched. Thank you for everything. Sincerely, Nicole Fantigrossi

I knew Joe when he was Sergeant with the MCSO, played racquetball with him, Roy Irving, Glenn Marcus and Rich Cupini at the "old" Winton Racquetball Club in Brighton. I was with the RPD at the time and remember Joe as an excellent athlete and police officer. I was not surprised when my "kids" (adults themselves and both. Lawyers and Former ADA's) told me that Joe was an Irondequoit Town Justice. Just a great person with a great sense of humor, in fact it was sometimes hard to tell when he was serious and when he was joking (although I am sure that when he was a TJ he was almost always serious). What a loss to the his family, community and law enforcement/criminal justice system. My prayers and condolences are with his family at this time of great loss.

Reading the tributes to Joe Genier posted in many places since his death on Thursday deepens my sense of loss and warms my heart at the same time, that so many people loved and valued him as I did. I am still in that shock and disbelief state that he could possibly be gone. He was my friend for more than 20 years and I loved him. He was a many-faceted man; a community volunteer, a fair and truly judicial judge, a highly-trained security professional who went to Secret Service Training regularly to keep his skills and knowledge up to date and a humorous, grumpy, honorable, intelligent, generous soul who helped countless people.
I called him a curmudgeon once, and asked him why he went to such lengths to appear that way, when he was really such a great guy. He asked me what a curmudgeon was, and after I told him, he said' ok, you can call me that.' That was all the answer I got, but I know his service in law enforcement left scars.
I am going to tell just one story that illustrates the Joe I knew. I knew a fine young man, a student at Eastridge, a refugee from the turmoil in South East Asia who fled here with his family. He was on the school's championship volleyball team, which was invited to a tournament. He did not have the funds to go, so I told him I would talk to some groups and businesses to get him some sponsors.
Of course, I asked Joe first, because he never said no, just for $25 toward the total. He said, in tones of long-suffering patience, "Lee, how much do you need." I told him and he said, don't keep asking people, I can do that, just bring him to meet me, and take a picture. He wrote a check on the spot. So the boy went off to the tournament, and I never heard anything further.
A few years ago, Joe greeted me at a community event with the most incredible smile I ever saw on his face, with the news that he had a story to tell me, that something wonderful had happened to him that day, because of me.
He had introduced himself to a young man he met at his athletic club, who said, I know you, Joe Genier, you changed my life, helped me become what I am today. It was the boy from Eastridge, who met a scout at the tournament and was given a full scholarship to Mercyhurst College and thus was launched on a career.
I guess neither Joe or I ever knew that, until then. Joe was so happy, he just had the sweetest smile the whole time he was telling me. It was amazing.
That was my Joe, the real Joe. That Joe was well known, judging by everything I have been reading. That wasn't the only student I went to Joe about, for help, and he always did everything he could.
He also was proud of all the marriages he did, including mine. He would tell people, "I married Lee," and I was always proud of that. I can't even imagine how much I will miss him, and how much he will be missed in this community. I will always love you, Joe.

To the family of Joe, please allow my wife and I to express our condolences at your loss. , Joe,.... Sarge, ....and Your Honor was larger than life itself. I first got to meet Joe via his brother Phil who I worked with at IPD. I am not sure what, but Joe saw something in me and encouraged me to pursue a career at the Monroe County Sheriff's Department (yes we were department back then) He advocated strongly for me and that helped in getting appointed to the part time police academy. Joe would always check in on me then as I went to different agencies over time. He had a confidence when he spoke, he cared, he was sincere. He had a sense of humor, I am grateful for having known him and to call him friend. There will be no one that can come along to take his place. We are all better off for having him in our lives. Thanks Sarge.

Joe was probably my fathers biggest fan. As clients and counsel will attest, every time I appeared before him in Court he would announce "Mr. Fiandach's father was a better lawyer than him. He knew all the law, his son knows only one section!" Seriously, Joe was a level headed judge who was living proof that you do not need a law degree to dispense justice. He was a close friend with whom I could always discuss a problem and who I knew would always have the right advice. I'm gonna miss you Joe.
